How to Bargain while in India

Visiting India? Plan to Shop?

Well, get prepared to be charged exorbitant prices at most flea markets and shops, as a cost of not being the ‘Local’ or more precisely, the one with Dollars!

Image via CNNgo

Surely lot of cities in world are plagued by the bargaining business, but Indian shopkeepers have there own set of rules and courtesy’s when it comes to haggling.

It’s not like all shopkeepers in India want to trick you into raking out cash, but yes – considerable amount of them will. You need to beware. Never take a shopkeepers word on the first price. There will always be scope for going down. And incase there is not, you will find out automatically by his behavior.

Bargaining in Indian markets require a careful approach. There are several ways to get the shopkeeper to sell at a price that you are willing to pay but it requires certain tact & sound judgment at that point of time. For example – if the shopkeeper sees that spark in your eyes of totally flipping out on an item, no matter how much you haggle – he will win his case.

CNNGo recently came up with an interesting article on various ways to haggle in India. A compilation of 5 bargaining Strategies that will come in really handy on your visit to India

Strategy 1 – BEG

Strategy 2 – FIGHT

Strategy 3 – BLUFF

Strategy 4 – Be Unreasonable

Strategy 5 – Lay your cards down and take bargaining off the table

Icelandic Volcano Showing Reduced Activity

We would like to share the latest update on the Icelandic volcano by accu-weather.com.

The Icelandic volcano is showing reduced activity, and most airports across Europe have enjoyed more than a week of ash-free skies.  Since the last bout of major airport closures on May 16, which affected Heathrow and Gatwick in London, the ash plume has been decreasing in size.

According to an Icelandic Met Office assessment made Monday morning, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull has been reduced to a plume of steam and no magma is being released. The current elevation of the cloud is between 7,000 and 10,000 ft.

Provided the volcano activity continues to subside, AccuWeather.com meteorologists said prevailing winds should keep any ash north of Europe. The cloud remains just south of Iceland.

Volcanic experts out of London’s Met Office reported on Sunday that Eyjafjallajokull could continue to erupt, and at a higher intensity in coming days. Eruptions have been erratic, and there is much uncertainty as to how long the decreased activity will last.

Why Travel Insurance has become Necessary in Today’s Unpredictable World?

Encountering the unexpected is often a part of travel; ranging from the inconvenient toTravel Insurance a truly serious emergency. This year has already seen an onslaught of travel mishaps from the volcanic ash cloud over Europe to Haiti Earthquake to Thailand emergency. No Continent is being spared. All of which have put the tourists and travelers under despair, add to it the loss of time and money.

As people who have seen the world, most of us are afflicted with the ‘This can never happen to me’ syndrome. We often plan the best of trips but forget taking care of the part which reads – Things Can Go Wrong.

Recent travel mishaps are a wake up call to safeguard our lives and resources against anything that can go wrong while traveling.

Some Key happenings / reasons why Travel Insurance has become most important in today’s scenario –

Recent volcanic eruption – Ash clouds from the volcanic eruption in Iceland have caused flight delays in major European airports and flight cancellations. While most airports have recovered from the event and but are maintaining normal flight schedules, travel insurance provide travelers with coverage should they experience an upcoming travel disruption.

Terrorism & Civil disruption – Take recent violence & curfew in Bangkok or terror attacks in India or recent strikes in Nepal. Terrorism coverage protects your trip investment in case of a terrorist act in the city that is part of your itinerary. When a plan includes this coverage and you are eligible for it, you are protected if you need to cancel your trip or your trip gets interrupted.

Due to the recent earthquakes, snowstorms and other natural disasters like tsunami, hurricane Katrina it’s become more and more important to be cautious while traveling. Take for instance the plight of thousands of Tourists to Haiti & other parts of the Caribbean who were affected by the massive catastrophe. Isn’t this a good enough reason to think about safeguarding yourself before going to natural disaster prone regions? While buying insurance, be aware that most travel insurance policies don’t cover events related to natural disasters in progress or that have just happened. Even an approaching hurricane wouldn’t be covered but the exception to the rule is “Cancel for any Reason” coverage, a catch-all policy that is offered by many travel insurance companies, if purchased within certain days of an initial deposit payment, allows for cancellation of a trip without explanation.

The H1N1 virus has affected travelers in many ways. Trip cancellations, medical quarantines and health coverage concerns are all part of the thought process when planning a holiday or business trip. Imagine this.  You’ve finally departed for that two-week vacation you have been planning for months and you are looking forward to some relaxation and some fun.  But then something unexpected happens.  On the plane ride you are seated near someone who is coughing, and obviously ill.  You arrive at your destination and learn you are being quarantined. For several days you are forced to miss out on your vacation and remain in quarantine.  It’s one of the worst things that could happen to you on your trip.  And it’s also one of the best reasons travel insurance is such a great investment.

When families travel, there is always the risk that a sudden injury / illness or an adult will leave minor children without an attendant. In this case one of the family travel benefits, Escort for Minor can pay for the economy transport costs to return unattended children home, with an escort if necessary. The Emergency Reunion benefit provides reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses when the physician recommends that the Insured have a family member at their side during a medical transport.

Sudden death in the family – Say for instance, you have planned a dream vacation and spent lots of money and you are looking forward for your vacation and there happens a death in immediate family and now you cannot get refund for the trip due to restrictive cancellation policies. Imagine if you would have purchased travel insurance that could have saved lots of money.

Latest on Thailand

The anti government red-shirts have now been removed from central Bangkok and its surrounding areas. The protesters have been safely returned home using government transportation and were provided with money for food.

Life in Bangkok is again returning to normal and is expected to be completely safe after a few days of clean up operations.  The Central World Department store set on fire by red-shirt protesters collapsed and the debris is being cleared.  The government has re-taken all areas of Bangkok and the situation has been stabilized.   The BTS and MRT mass transit systems will remain closed until tomorrow but hope to re-open in their entirety on Monday.

Prime Minister Abhisit has restored law and order with minimum force and casualties.  Mr. Abhisit has announced that his 5 point reconciliation for peace will go ahead with fresh elections due later this year.  External factions are being investigated for their part in inciting unrest in Thailand.

Rules of Air Travel Etiquette to live by

Here’s an interesting compilation of 14 funny yet ‘so true’ rules of air travel by Chris Anderson (of CNN). Read on.

1. First there’s the “don’t hog the whole arm rest we both paid for rule.” Though, there have known to be exceptions. Boomer Grigsby, sorry I fell asleep on your shoulder one flight. Boomer was a very large muscular man and hogged the whole arm rest, but he was pretty foxy. Free pass.

2. Please don’t use my seat to pull yourself up out of yours, shaking it violently as you struggle to gain balance. Use your armrests, turn your body a little, and you too can make it happen without causing a minor jolt at 30,000 feet and jerking my chair.

3. Pee before boarding. Seriously. Do it. That way you won’t have to make a beeline to the plane’s toilet as soon as you board, or jump out of your seat as soon as that flashing seat belt light turns off.

4. Don’t stop at the top of the escalator leading to a security line. If you do, then expect some quite unfriendly shoves from those coming up behind you. ‘Those’ meaning me. My elbows are sharp, I’ll use them. Maybe my knees if you’re on the phone. Think of me as the Angel of Airline Etiquette, always watching.

5. Do not, I repeat do not, talk on your cell phone in the security line. Nobody is that important, and more importantly you’re holding everybody else up, people that would actually like to get through the security checks before take-off.

6. When flying domestically, in or out of the United States, please just take your shoes off when going through security without asking people around you, “Do I need to take off my shoes?” Yes, you do. You need to. You really don’t need to ask.

7. Don’t wear shoe laces. They take forever to untie and re-tie while going through security. Slip on shoes are your God-given right to wear. Wear them.

8. Expert traveler lines are for expert travelers. If you have to question this or don’t know what I’m talking about, then you do not qualify as an expert traveler.

9. Step back from the baggage claim carousel. You’re only getting in the way. Only step up when you see your bag, otherwise you’re just one big blockage, hunting blind and preventing others from seeing their targets.

10. If you can’t lift your bag over your head and put it on top of your refrigerator, don’t bring it onto the plane. A fridge is nearly the same pitch and height as the overhead storage.
